Ten good reasons to start social bookmarking today

Most of my readers are using social bookmarks, I suppose. If you are looking for some arguments to persuade anybody, here we are…

  1. You are not really interested in collaborating with others? But at least you may wish to have a really comfortable place to back up your bookmarks, to get them back e.g. after installing a new system, changing your desktop or switching to another browser.
  2. Fill up your linkdump by subscribing to others’ social bookmarks.
  3. Find quickly the most recommended bookmarks about a topic, e.g. interesting informations about Firefox extensions will be found at del.icio.us/tag/firefox+extensions, and subscribe to it.
  4. No time to read an obviously interesting article now? No possibility to print it? Add articles with the tag toberead to your database, and read and/ or print them later.
  5. Make a copy of interesting newspaper articles – or are you sure your newspaper company will have permalinks and a free archive forever? This advice only works with Furl, Spurl, Jots or MyYahoo.
  6. Find other users with similar interests.
  7. Form groups with other users to collect the most important bookmarks about your favorite topics. These groups can be public or private, with invitations and so on, depending on the service you choose.
  8. Social bookmarks are present in your browsers, with sidebars, toolbars and extensions for easy access, in some cases even to sync local bookmarks.
  9. If you’re a blogger: make your own linkdump for all the links that are not worth to make an entry, integrate it into your sidebar. If you are not a blogger: Social bookmarks can be used as a kind of weblog for all those that are not able or not willing to write more than Cool! or Nice! about a link.
  10. Learn to organize your knowledge with tags and / or categories. Any library does so, why not you?

There are even more arguments. If you want to know more about the features of different services, I’d like to remind my charts that will be updated in the next four weeks.
