Social bookmarks review - 3rd edition
I’m proud to present the version 3.0 of my Social bookmarks’ charts.
What’s new?
- Gibeo was removed from of the charts, as it is a web annotation service, not really a social bookmarking tool.
- jots, netvouz and blinklist, digg.com, a kind of story rating system, and two more open source solutions – Scuttle and de.lirio.us – have been added. There are 19 services in the charts now.
- there are some more aspects – e. g. the forming of groups, link validation or how the user is informed about new features and updates.
Get the document here (PDF, 91 KB). If you want to support the evolution of this script, you are invited politely to make a donation or to buy a book for me.
Postscriptum 11/08/2005: I just made some corrections to the document (now Version 3.1).

I’m sorry we were left out. Hopefully we’ll get included in your next review. BookmarkSync, one of the Internet’s pioneers in bookmark synchronization in the late 90’s is a pretty good social bookmark manager with some unique tools.

Well, you cannot capture all social bookmark communities, but I would suggest adding Connectedy.com. The signature on your feature matrix is going to be somewhat different for Connectedy. Basically it was designed by very personal standards. People will like it if they like to have complete control over the organization, sharing, and naming conventions in their links. That’s what its inventor wanted in such a tool. I urge you to check it out: http://www.connectedy.com
The problem about Connectedy is that is has few features, especially there is no RSS feed – one reason for me not to include it. Sorry. Contact me when there is a RSS feed included.
Hi,
Nice to see the updated version. I see some X’s missing in the Simpy column, though:
Clippings – Simpy has them – you can add them or edit them when you add or edit a link. They are simply called “Notes” (not to be mixed up with a separate Notes feature)
Send links (tell-a-friend) – Simpy has this. A link labelled “mail” is next to each link.
Exporting links as – Simpy supports that: http://www.simpy.com/simpy/service/api/rest/GetLinks.jsp
Link validation – Simpy’s got this, too, via “broken links” and “redirected links”.
Suggestions for additional categories:
similar links
related tags
related users
full-text search
I hope you can update your PDF and thanks again for providing this!
Thanks for your feedback. I’m sorry I’m not so good involved into Simpy features -at least Simpy notes are already mentioned. I will update the PDF as soon as possible.
Hi,
A wonderful work.
I kindly suggest you to put on the list wists.com and myprogs.com.
Carmen
I heard about wists.com some time ago, at an early beta stage and lost it out of sight, thanks. myprogs.com is just a CS2 series promo site and has nothing to do with social bookmarking – maybe you misspelled it?
Thanks for all the hard work in putting this together. I have a few edits for www.BlinkList.com, since we just added a few new features:
1) It is now possible to leave comments on others links
2) RSS
We offer RSS feeds not only for tags but also for users.
I noticed that you did not mark our RSS feeds as easy to include in home page. Did you try clicking on one of our RSS buttons?
It automatically generates the JS code for the user. This is more than what I have seend on other services.
In addition, we offer the ability to easily customize the feed right there.
Perhaps you did not see this. If you did, please let us know how we can make it even simpler and easier to use.
3) You can now import links from IE, FireFox and Opera
4) You mentioned that we do not have search? What type of search are you looking for?
On del.icio.us I have not found a search function and they have a check and we prominently feature tag search.
Again, thanks for putting all of this together and please let me know if you have any questions!
Here are some suggestions for additional features: – Ability to organize links into different channels for easier finding
– Ability to select favorite tags and links
Mike
Hi again,
Thanks for your reply.
Indeed, the correct address is http://myprogs.net/ – an interesting social bookmark system for programs.
Carmen
Thanks.

Social Bookmarking Tour
I just found at reddit a link to Simpy. What, I thought, yet another of these social bookmark thingies? How many of these things does the web need, or have? So I went to the wikipedia entry on social bookmarking, which led me to Torsten Rox's compariso...
Web Feeds is a social bookmark site with a difference
Users moderate and decide which items make it to the home page, only rules being no links to adult related, illegal activity or affiliate sites.
Web Feeds
can somebody help me with some of these terms? i’m trying to learn the ins and outs of social bookmarking…
Mentions – pages within same domain
Privacy – archive other feeds
what are these and what do they mean?
It’s quite easy. Mentions pages withinsame domain means that the service tells you what pages of this domain other people have bookmarked. If you bookmark http://www.irox.de/roxomatic, you will probably see that other people have bookmarked the page http://www.irox.de/roxomatic/856 before.
The second point means that the service offers a separated page where to collect other people’s feeds, e.g. the del.icio.us inbox.
Hi there. I just wanted to find out if you are working on updating your social bookmarking reviews. If you are, I can send you and update on www.blinklist.com. We just rolled out a lot of new features and improvements that I thought you might find interestig. Bis spaeter, Mike
1. FURL does let you pull your clips by category using the &topics parameter – here’s the syntax I use on my site (note: Category name is hardcoded, but the furl data is automatic) – and they provide this code via their gui configuration tool:
Creation/Evolution
[script type=”text/javascript” src=”http://www.furl.net/siteLatest.jsp?userid=15200&maxitems=7&topics=277947&spawn=y&bullets=n&furl=n”]
2. Under tools, you should add the attribute “Right click registry edit” – FURL (and delicious, I think) have more than just a bookmarklet feature. You can download a registry hack which adds it to your browswer’s right click (at least, for IE).
3. Bloglines.com, the excellent online blog aggregator, also has a clipping service – you should add that to your matrix
If you address these comments in your next eval, I promise you, I will buy you a book. Fantastic job, btw. Keep it up!
Also, SPURL has a feature where you can put a SPURL this button into your blog template, which allows users to just click on the button in your page to spurl the page – and it has a built in counter. Very nice. You should add that to your list of attributes as well ;)

I’ve been following your work for a while and even cited it in a small paper I wrote a few months back. I’m pleased to see that you’re continuing to update it.
One system which I hope you’ll consider including in the next revision is Shadows (http://www.shadows.com). Shadows’ unique feature is that it associates URLs not only with tags and bookmarks but with threaded discussions, effectively creating a discussion board for any site on the web.
I had a look at it and Shadow will be part of the next edition.
Thanks again for all of your work. I like to see this information all in one spot. I always learn something here.
I find one major service, Yahoo MyWeb 2.0 missing in this review. Please add it.
